Israel has continually pursued a policy of nuclear ambiguity neither confirming nor denying that is has nuclear weapons but in a recent television interview Prime Minister Ehud Olmert appeared to confirm that Israel was the only country in the Middle East to posses nuclear weapons.
In the interview Olmert claimed that Israel had never threatened any country with annihilation. “Iran, openly, explicitly and publicly threatens to wipe Israel off the map” he said then continuing added “Can you say that this is the same level, when they are aspiring to have nuclear weapons, as America, France, Israel, Russia?”
Last week U.S Secretary of Defense Robert Gates also appeared to let it slip that Israel had nuclear weapons of mass destruction.
Time will tell if these current revelations will have any effect on the 2 billion US dollars that Israel currently gets in military and other aid from America. The US has a ban on funding any countries that proliferate weapons of mass destruction. By consistently refusing to confirm or deny the existence of weapons of mass destruction Israel has so far been able to avoid this ban. This is seen by the Arab countries as evidence of America’s double standards when dealing with the Middle East.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s aides are now saying that there has been no change in the policy of nuclear ambiguity and that Olmert “did not mean to say anything like that.” Meanwhile the Israeli media are describing the Prime Ministers remarks as “Olmert's nuclear slip of the tongue”.
