The Doha Asian Games Organising Committee (DAGOC) has ensured a lasting legacy for Qatar by working with the Supreme Council for the Environment and Natural Reserves (SCENR) to launch the countries latest ecological attraction

Umm Tais National Park, on the north-eastern tip of Qatar, will give visitors an unrivaled opportunity see Qatar’s wide variety of birds and marine life at close quarters. This area of islands, Mangrove forests, beaches and varied geological structures combined with changing water levels and current patterns has created a diverse habitat that is literally teeming with wildlife and is set to become Qatar’s premier eco-tourist destination .

The park contains two mangrove forests and an important turtle nesting beach as well as the ruins of the village of Al Mafyar on the adjacent mainland at the southern tip of Umm Tais. With support from Qatar National Museums Authority there are plans to reconstruct the existing houses and mosque. Parts of the historical settlement may also be used to house the visitor centre, ranger station and a research centre.

Umm Tais National Park was inaugurated on 25th November the day the Asian Games Torch arrived in Qatar.
