Previously tourism has been the province of the Ministry of Information who will now pass control of promotional campaigns and marketing strategy to a new independent tourism board.
Five million tourists visited Bahrain in 2005, mostly families from the other Gulf States. The government hopes that this new venture will significantly increase these figures.
