Watching the news of the Iranian Government hosted Review of the Holocaust: Global Vision Conference on Al Jazeera last night I was amazed to see a delegation of Orthodox Jews in attendance. Why, I wondered, were they giving credence to an event that was questioning the Nazi genocide of the Jews?
It soon became apparent that these were Orthodox Jews who were opposed to the setting up and continued existence of the State of Israel and wanted a return to a Palestine where Jews and Muslims had peacefully co-existed for centuries.
British Rabbi Aharon Cohen of Neturei Karta said he had no doubt that the Holocaust had happened and that it would be an affront to the memory of those who died to belittle it. But the Holocaust was being used as an excuse by the Zionists in Israel to perpetrate unjust acts against the Palestinian people.
It was an interesting debate and covered much of what could be considered the root cause of most troubles in the Middle East today. But I still had difficulties getting my head round watching Orthodox Jews with beards, black hats and coats side by side with the Ku Klux Klan, even if the latter were minus their bedsheets.
