Scheduled flights from Europe to Iraq will resume on December 11th following the granting of rights to Austrian Airlines.

Scheduled flights from Europe to Iraq will resume on December 11th . Austrian Airlines has been granted rights to operate in the country and will initially be running a twice weekly service on Mondays and Fridays.

Erbil, the destination city, is the fourth largest in Iraq with a population close to a million. It’s in the Kurdistan region and regarded as a safe gateway to the country. The United Nations has plans to establish their Iraq support point in Erbil and a number of International companies are already operating there.

Passengers arriving from Vienna will be able to access reasonable overland transport to the cities of Kirkuk, Sulaymaniyah and Mosul.

It’s expected that most of the passengers on these flights will initially be people traveling for work or business purposes but it does open up possibilities for the intrepid independent traveler.
