Qatar, the first Gulf state to host the Asian Games, won their first gold medal yesterday with team success in the equestrian three-day eventing. They also lifted an individual silver medal.
Awad Mohammed Al Qahtani, Rashid Faraj Alat Al Marri, Ali Mohammed Ali Al Marri and Abdulla Ali Abdulla Al Ejail totalled 182.30 points over the three days of dressage, cross-country and show jumping. Japan with 204.10 points won the silver medal while Indonesia managed a bronze with total points of 230.20.
Although the gold medal was a first for the Equestrian team it gave Qatar their 15th gold medal in the Asian Games since 1986 when Talal Mansoor won the men’s 100 metre athletics.
Al Ejail led the way with a clear round in the show jumping and a perfect display in the cross-country. The combined Qatar team knocked down just three fences and with just a few minor time penalties managed to keep ahead of rivals Japan.
Al Ejail was the last of the Qatar team to ride, His performance, on horse Quinten, not only ensured victory for Qatar but let Al Ejail claim the individual Silver medal. Japan’s Yoshiaki Oiwa on Khanjer Black won the Gold while Bronze was awarded to Jeremiah Husref Malek of Malaysia.
