Visiting first thing in the morning is good for that too.
Did you get a chance to tour the Desert castles East of Amman?

It's north and West of Amman.
It's in the North of Amman and the Jordan Valley section of my new Globetrotter Guide to Jordan. It's an excellent Castle. When I was there last June I met a Jordanian family. The daughter was about 12 and had been learning English at school. Naturally she accosted me to indulge in a spot of practice. The custodian was a relative so she knew the place well and took great delight in showing me round. Then we all had a cup of tea.

Are you by any chance writing a guidebook to Jordan?

You can't live at Petra it's an archeological monument. I have stayed at the Taybat Zaman Hotel in a nearby village. It was created by restoring and adapting a mediaeval village. It's a splendid hotel. Last June I stayed in the Movenpick Petra which is just a few meters from the entrance gate.
You can see the final shortlist of 21 potential wonders here.
